New lesbian singles group forms in northwest Ohio

Toledo

Single lesbians in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan will have a new opportunity to meet each other for friendship and networking in 2001. That's when Les Be Friends plans to launch its first calendar of events.

While the group's primary function is to provide social activities for women, organizers hope Les Be Friends fosters a sense of community among its members. In fact, its mission is to provide activities that nurture mind, body, and spirit.

University surveys students on campus GLBT climate

Cleveland Surveys are being sent out to 2,500 Cleveland State University students in an effort to gather information on the general attitude and climate at CSU for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning students.

Project Lambda, a collaborative pilot program of the Department of Student Life and the Office of Minority Affairs and Community Relations at CSU, is conducting this general survey to help assess both the general attitude regarding GLBTQ issues and the climate at the university.

The surveys are being sent to a randomly generated list of current CSU students.

"It's important for students to return the general survey with honest answers so we can develop an idea of the true atmosphere here at CSU," said Paul Putman, coordinator of the Project Lambda pilot program.

A second, self-select survey is being conducted parallel to the general survey.

This "select survey" is designed specifically for GLBTQ students to complete to share their needs and attitudes regarding their experience at CSU.

"It's also very important for as many GLBTQ students as possible to complete the select survey," said Putnam, “as that will provide the benchmark for statistical information regarding GLBTQ CSU students, and it will also help us determine needed services for this often overlooked population."

The select survey is available via the Project Lambda web site at http:// www.csuohio.edu/lambda/ or students can e-mail lambda@csuohio.edu to request that a copy be returned to them via e-mail or sent U.S. mail to their home.

The survey may also be obtained in the Department of Student Life on campus, located in University Center Room 102. All surveys can be returned to the Department of Student Life or returned via U.S. mail. The deadline for both surveys is December 8. ♡

Make a Difference

Les Be Friends is unique because it is targeted specifically toward single women. The group plans a broad range of activities, which include cultural events, concerts. coffees, card parties, and sporting events.

"After talking with several women in the community, it became apparent there are few organized events to help adult single women meet and network with each other," said one of the group's organizers. "We want to bring together single women from diverse backgrounds in an atmosphere that promotes friendship and unity."

Women interested in joining Les Be Friends are encouraged to attend an informational meeting on December 9 at 5 p.m., at People Called Women, 3153 W. Central Ave., Toledo. The meeting is intended to provide members with an overview of the group's objectives and the activities planned for January and February 2001.

Lesbians who wish to join the group may also e-mail their names and addresses to singlesinfo accesstoledo.com. All personal information provided to Les Be Friends and the membership list will remain confidential.

Log Cabin Columbus names Troy Doucet board secretary

Columbus-The Log Cabin Republicans of Columbus voted Troy Doucet to their board as secretary and events director.

Doucet is president of EDR Duplication and is pursuing a BA in economics at Ohio State University. He was a candidate for president of the OSU undergraduate student government and fundraising chair for the Stonewall booth at the Ohio State Fair.

In addition to his statutory duties as chapter secretary, Doucet will be responsible for organizing Log Cabin's membership events for 2001-2002. Doucet replaces Kevin Walter, who resigned due to growing professional duties.

Doucet's major challenge will be to organize Log Cabin's second annual dinner in March 2001. The first dinner, held in March of 2000, raised $22,000 for the group.

The Log Cabin Republican Club of Columbus is the voice of gay and lesbian Republicans in central Ohio. It is a chapter
